Can Sunlight Generate Heat?

-All of the Earth’s living material or ‘biomass’ exists in a thin layer around the surface of
the planet called the biosphere.
-It is a huge store of energy that is continually replenished by the Sun through photosynthesis.
-Biomass is any plant or animal matter, including plant and animal waste and human sewage.
-Energy crops are plants grown specifically for fuel.
How is it used to generate electricity?

Advantage

-It is renewable
-It is a carbon neutral source of energy
Disadvantage
-It is an expensive method of generating electricity

-Biomass power plants need to be built near a plentiful supply of biomass fuel.

What is Solar Energy?

-Solar energy is energy from the Sun
-The Sun gives off plenty of energy, which can be used to provide heat and to generate electricity.
-There are two kinds of solar panels: solar thermal panels, which heat water, and solar PV (photovoltaic) panels, which change light energy into electricity.

Advantage

-it is renewable
-It does not produce any carbon dioxide (CO2), which contributes to the greenhouse effect.
-Energy is usually generated at or near to the location it will be used.This keeps transmission and distribution costs to an absolute minimum.
Disadvantage
-PV cells do not work so well when it is cloudy and do not work at night

-Solar power works better in hot places, so its use is therefore limited.

What is Geothermal Energy?

-Geothermal energy is a form of renewable energy that is not dependant on the Sun, but on heat that comes from deep below the surface of the Earth in the layer called the mantle.

Advantages

-Geothermal energy does not produce any pollution.
-Running costs for a geothermal power station are very low.

Disadvantages

-It is difficult to find suitable sites to put a geothermal power station.
-If not carefully managed, a borehole can ‘run out of steam’ and may not be useable for several decades.
-Dangerous gases and minerals can come out of a borehole, which may be difficult to dispose of.

Boys Brigade Founder's Day Celebration

The Boys Brigade Founder's Day Celebration on 22nd October 2011 was a wonderful event. This year, we celebrated it in Trinity Methodist Church, the home of 1st Petaling Jaya Company. 1st Puchong had the honor of  being in the Guard of Honor together with 1st Petaling Jaya and 4th Petaling Jaya company. The members of 1st Puchong involved in the Guard of Honor were:

4. Private Joel Tan
5. Private Desmond Wong
6. Private Edmund Kong

It was a wonderful event and we hope to join it next year.

WHAT IS ELECTRIC GENERATOR?

-AN ELECTRICAL GENERATOR IS A MACHINE WHICH CONVERTS MECHANICAL ENERGY (OR POWER) INTO ELECTRICAL ENERGY (OR POWER).

WHAT IS WIND ENERGY?

-Wind has been used for a long time to make sailing boats move and windmills work.
-Now, giant wind turbines use the force of the wind to turn electricity generators.

ADVANTAGES

-Wind is a renewable source so it will not run out.

DISADVANTAGES

-cannot control when the wind blows
-can only be built in certain areas
-Wind turbines shut down in very strong or very weak winds.

-Moving water contains a lot of energy.
-Hydroelectric energy involves generating electricity using the
power of moving water ('hydro' is a Greek word meaning water)

DISADVANTAGES

-Valuable land is flooded when a reservoir is made homes and wildlife habitats can be lost.
-A good site for a hydroelectric power plant, such as a mountainous region, is not always near towns.

ADVANTAGES

-It needs no fuel
-Once the plant is built, operating costs are very low, so the energy produced is very cheap
-Tides are predictable

DISADVANTAGES

-Barrages can be very expensive to build.
-There is no one leading tidal stream device at the moment.
-The plants can only produces power when the tide is flowing in or out – around 20 hours a day

WAVE ENERGY
-Waves are the movement of water near the surface of the sea, and are created by
the wind blowing across it.

-It is a more predictable energy source than wind.
-There are no fuel costs, unlike conventional power generation.

-Equipment needs to be designed to
survive bad weather conditions such as storms.
-There may be high maintenance costs,
because the devices can be far out at sea.
-There is no leading device at the moment

Nature Awareness - Energy

What is energy?
Energy helps us do things.
It gives us light. It warms our bodies and homes. It bakes cakes and keeps milk cold. It runs our TVs and our cars. It makes us grow and move and think.
Energy is the power to change things.
It is the ability to do work.

Where does energy come from?
Generally, energy can be divided into solar energy, geothermal energy and nuclear energy. Solar energy can be transformed to other forms e.g. wind energy, hydro energy, ocean energy, petroleum and coal.

What is potential energy?
Potential energy is the stored energy of position.
It can be thought of as energy that is “stored” by any physical system.
It is called potential because, in its current form, it is not doing any work or causing any change in its surroundings.

What is kinetic energy?
The extra energy that an object possesses when it is in motion is known as kinetic energy.
This motion of the object can be in any possible direction, and there are several different types of motion by which an object can move.

What is mechanical energy?
Mechanical energy is the sum of energy in a mechanical system.
Mechanical energy exists as both kinetic and potential energy in a system.
Kinetic energy, the energy of motion, exists whenever an object is in motion.
Potential energy is based on the position of an object.
It can not cause any change on its own, but it can be converted to other forms of energy.

Changing Energy
Energy can be transformed into another sort of energy.
But it cannot be created AND it cannot be destroyed.
Energy has always existed in one form or another.

Heat Energy
Heat is a form of energy.
We use it for a lot of things, like warming our homes and cooking our food.

The Enrollment and Awards Ceremony 2011 of 1st Puchong Boys Brigade is over. 1st Puchong would like to thank the parents, friends and other companies who had attended the event. We hope that you had a wonderful time during the ceremony watching the performances carried out by the Pre-Juniors, Juniors and Seniors Section.

Thank you Sir Peter for leading us as our Captain for 2 years. We pray that our new Captain, Captain Ong Chee Meng would also lead us well. We also had several promotions in the Senior Section.
