Junior Camp May 2013

Another Junior Camp was help during May. This time we concentrated more on having fun, meanwhile, learning a lots of things too. We also did expedition which includes Night Walk and Jungle trekking, not to forget our awesome camp fire! Juniors had their sleep inside their own tents, to get the most out of the feel of camping. They also learnt to cook meals for themselves, most of all, we believed that day had lots of fun and learnt a lot of things during the camp.

ANTS, BNTS, Boot Camp, Junior Camp.

ANTS, BNTS, Boot Camp and Junior Leadership Camp was help back in March 2013. ANTS is help at a different location, whereas BNTS, Boot Camp and Junior Camp is help at one of Malaysia's NS camp site. All of our members learn a lot during these camps, and the seniors might have gone through some "torture" since this is part of the training and part of the life! We believe our members have learn a lot during these camps and can apply the skills that they learnt during these camps in daily life and during BB activities. Below are a few shots that we captured during these camps.

First Aid Award Class

A few weeks ago all the seniors have attended a First Aid class, conducted by Dr. Rishya Manikam (Head of Emergency and Trauma, University Malaya Medical Center). Things which the seniors have learnt includes CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, how to cure a wound, a burnt, how to handle and bandage a fracture.

Lesson 5
What is Nuclear Fission?
-When a large fissile atomic nucleus such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239 absorbs a neutron, it may undergo nuclear fission.
What is Nuclear Energy?
-Nuclear energy uses a special fuel made from a rare metal called uranium.
-Nuclear energy produces heat, which is used to generate electricity.
-It can also be used to power big ships and submarines.
How a nuclear power station work?
http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/343.htm#using
Advantages
-A small amount of nuclear fuel produces a lot of electricity.
-Nuclear fuel is readily available and is easily stored.
-Nuclear power stations do not produce any carbon dioxide.
Disadvantages
-Nuclear power stations may be unpopular with people who are concerned about how safe they are.
-Nuclear energy is not renewable.
-Nuclear energy produces dangerous radioactive waste which must be buried in sealed containers for a long time.
-Nuclear power stations cannot be switched on and off easily.

Why Earth Getting hotter?
**Greenhouse Effect**
-The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions.
-A greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range.
-The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.

Lesson 4
What is Coal?
-Coal is a fuel that supplies a lot of our country's energy needs.
How is Coal formed?
-Coal is formed when peat is altered physically and chemically.
-This process is called "Coalification."
How a coal-fired power station works?
http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/353.htm
Advantages
-Burning coal is one of the cheapest ways to generate power at the moment.
-Coal power stations can be built anywhere where there are good transport links and where there is a plentiful supply of cooling water.
Disadvantages
-Coal is not renewable
-Coal is not easy to transport
-Burning coal produces carbon dioxide

What is oil?
-Oil is a fuel found underground.
How oil is form?
http://savingplanetearth.co.uk/Fossil%20Fuels.htm
How a coal-fired power station works?
http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/351.htm
Advantages
-Oil is easy to transport
-Oil-fired power stations can be built anywhere where there are good transport links and where there is a
plentiful supply of cooling water.
-A large amount of electricity can be generated from one power station quickly (efficient).
Disadvantages
-Oil is not renewable
-It also produces other emissions eg. sulphur dioxide.
-Burning oil produces produces carbon dioxide, a gas which makes it harder for the Sun's heat to escape into space. This makes the Earth's atmosphere warmer and can cause problems like making countries hotter and drier.
-New pipelines to transport oil can be costly to build.

What is Natural Gas?
-Natural gas is a fuel found underground, often under the sea bed.
How a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station works?
http://www.eon-uk.com/EnergyExperience/352.htm#using
Advantages
-Gas is light and easy to transport by pipeline
-Gas-fired power stations are normally built near rivers and the gas pipeline network, but they can be built anywhere.
- Large amounts of electricity can be generated from one gas-fired power station
Disadvantages
-Gas is not renewable. There is a limited supply, which will eventually be used up.
-Gas is a fossil fuel and burning it produces carbon dioxide, a gas which makes it harder for the Sun's heat to escape into space. This makes the Earth's atmosphere warmer and can cause problems like making countries hotter and drier.
The Benefit of natural gas over oil
-Natural gas is much cheaper than oil
-Natural gas burns cleaner than oil
